When I came across this one and read the blurb telling about royalty, magic, assassins and romance, I knew I would have to read it and I’m happy to report, it did not disappoint!

The Queen’s Assassin takes us through the story of Shadow, a farm girl who has been raised by her aunts, studies magic and aspires to be an assassin one day and Caledon who is the one and only queen’s assassin and for good reason. He is the deadliest assassin but he is also bound to her by a vow to find the missing Deian Scrolls. It is a vow that is carried from one generation to another until the vow is fulfilled. After one chance encounter and some more unforeseen circumstances, they are brought back together and set out on a dangerous mission to uncover a possible assassination plan against the queen or princess but this journey also reveals some truths that will change everything for both of them.

This is a story where the world building is so important and I will tell you, there are a lot of things to keep up with in the beginning. From the multiple countries spoken about and the history between them, to the who’s who and roles they played in both the past and present. But it was so fascinating and the more I read the more I wanted to know so it wasn’t hard for me to get swept up in it all and the having such wonderful main characters that I just adored certainly helped too.

Shadow is young and times maybe a little immature in her actions but she is fierce, opinionated and certainly stubborn and of course I love the spunky ones, but it was her sheer determination to not look weak in front the the Queen’s almighty assassin and that just made me want to root for her even more. Caledon on the other hand was one that I had to warm up to a little at the beginning. He was so brash and very untrusting when it came to Shadow but I guess I could understand being that way when he has always worked alone. These two might be two very different people but they do end up making a pretty strong pair and there was an obvious attraction between them, even if neither one of them wanted to admit it. I was curious to see where that went.

Shadow and Celadon’s journey had no shortage of action, from the breakout out from prison, the constant running and he fighting, posing as someone else to spy, to the monks who weren’t really monks. There was magic and romance in the air as well but there is an assassination plot to uncover. The story does take a bit a twist at the end and things of course change between Shadow and Celadon and their future. The ending left my wanting more and I will be anxiously waiting for the next installment now!

The Queen’s Assassin is a story filled with royalty, promises made, a battle for magic and of course romance, what more could I ask for?! And it was a fantastic start to the series!
