After reading the summary, I immediately knew I wanted to check out this book! Assassins? Please, they're my favorite! And as I began to read, I realized this book was by Melissa de la Cruz and while I've never read any of her books, I knew she was well known in the fantasy genre. I had high expectations

I was immediately immersed in the world she created from just a few scriptures, however, once we get to the present and meet Shadow, it reads like your typical heroine who wants to rebel against being a damsel. I had also hoped that Caledon Holt was an older man and that this would be a story of master and apprentice but it looks like it might go into your usual YA scenario of two teenagers saving the kingdom

None of these things are bad points, but they're also very typical. It makes me wonder how this book will be different
