The 'comprehensive history' at the beginning of The Queen's Assassin felt jarring to me - it offered so much information immediately that I was overwhelmed. The prologue, set 18 years in the past, was intriguing though, and the first few chapters in present day are fast-paced. Shadow is a likable main character; she wants to join the Guild but finds herself summoned to the palace by her mother instead. Even more interesting is Caledon, the Queen's Assassin, who simultaneously saves her life and uncovers a mystery. Despite the rocky start, I am looking forward to reading the rest of the book!

The cover design doesn't grab my attention but I would probably still pick up the book based on the title!
