This book took me several chapters to get into, but once I was in, I was hooked! I really loved the mystery surrounding the island and when the twist happened I was shocked! The story hits home even more once you realize that she wrote this very loosely based on her experience during quarantine.

The thing I struggled the most with was keeping up with the characters, but eventually it focuses in on Leelo and was much easier to follow. Leelo was a character that I felt empathy for and wanted more than anything for her to escape the island.

The twist in the book was really fantastic, and tied in the title of the book with the poison in the lake. It was eerie to know that the forest was feeding off of the people and had them so manipulated into trapping themselves.

Eerily whimsical, are the two words that came to my mind upon finishing this book. I would say that there seems to be so much lore around this world that could have been created that I am a little disappointed that the book was wrapped up so quickly in the end.
