I read the book Crown of Coral and Pearl, so I was looking forward to another book by Mara Rutherford, who was originally recommended to me by a friend.

I believe Poison Season was written during Covid, and the emotions in this book probably reflect how we were all feeling throughout it. One of the biggest things I think we all felt was isolation, and in this book, there is a whole lot of isolation on this island. There's this odd dynamic between Leelo, the other islanders, and the "outsiders". I found this dynamic very interesting but also quite relatable with covid and quarantine.

There's a lot of bloodthirst, fantasy, romance, and world-building.

This novel explores secrets that families can hold and how they will affect the family. It has first love and all the emotions that come with it, and the difficult idea of love vs duty. What an interesting book I loved reading it!

Excellent young adult novels with difficult themes that are relevant to today's young adult audience and reflect the experiences young people have had during the pandemic. Highly recommend!
