Mara Rutherford is a young adult author I'd seen around a lot. I'd always wanted to read one of her books and this cover was gorgeous so I was really excited for it. However I was a bit bored for majority of the book. This follows Leelo, a girl who has spent her entire life on this island guarded by a poisoned lake. Her brother with no powers is sent across it and this guy from the other land ends up in the boat back. She hides him in a secret shed and they begin to fall in love but they're running out of time. The beginning and end were interesting but the middle just felt like a slow burn romance. This did not feel like a high fantasy or horror book with the same stakes as a the grace year. There was some interesting revelations. I do think this appeals to young adult readers and many will enjoy it but it just wasn't for me. I would read another book by this author though.
