The cover of "The Poison Season"= 5 stars!
The book itself= 3, maybe 3.5 stars.

There was nothing inherently wrong with "The Poison Season." I've been thinking about Leelo and Jaren's story for the past few days, trying to pinpoint why I didn't connect with the story the way I wanted to.

The beginning provides an intriguing setting, including a large lake that is so poisonous that it instantly kills any creature that touches it and a wandering forest that requires people to make animal sacrifices to. These magical people live in seclusion, with the lake protecting them from outsiders. Leelo is a fine female protagonist: she's kind, she asks many of the right questions, and she has a strong moral compass.

I almost feel like my review is unfair/unkind and I've considered bumping up to four stars. I don't have any complaints! I don't have anything to actually SAY about the book! I have literally been sitting here for the past half hour trying to think about what to say about this book and the most I can really come up with is this: It's just not that memorable past the cover. I liked it and enjoyed reading it. I would recommend this to middle-grade readers who want some romance, but want more of an atmospheric read.

Thank you to Inkyard Press and Bookish First for providing me with a copy of this book!
