This is unlike any fantasy I've read before. I love (yet hate) the idea of those with magic being allowed to stay on the island, while those without magic being forced to leave. It's clear there are some characters who are very prickly, and others who are of a far gentler nature. I found myself quickly identifying with with the characters who couldn't stand to see death and destruction. This is definitely something I want to read.
