A Hint of Darkness in the Magical Forest

There's a hint of darkness within the world Leelo lives in and we get the feeling that she's ignorant as to why they must keep watch of outsiders and how they treat the magicless males.

The story is dual-pov and told in third-person--I don't mind reading stories like this, but I personally don't like the way it's hinted at a "forced" romantic plot of Leelo and Jaren. There are better ways to do this than connecting them through some magical bond.

I also thought the characterization of Leelo was strange; she has a reserved personality, which contrasts with her cousin, the bolder of the two. Yet, in one instance we see her doing blood magic which is against their "code" and using a dead cygnet for her crown's "theme" while in another scene, we're told she can't stomach an animal's slaughter for meat or the drowning that takes place. Unless this is part of the duality reflective of the world she lives in?

I'm not a fan of the cover (prefer no people on them), but I can see how it may relate to some of the elements of the story (though it still could've been done without seeing a person on there).
