Slow start but fun read
I’m glad other reviewers warned this book gets off to a slow start. Had I not known that ahead of time I might have given up. After 50 pages or so the story really hits its stride and ended up being a fun read.
After Jacob Finch Bonner published his first book it garnered some praise. His second book failed to draw any attention. To his utter dismay, he's stuck teaching in a MFA program in order to pay the bills. One of his students, Evan Parker, fits the definition of arrogant but surprisingly he came with an extraordinary plot for a novel. Jacob knows when the book is published it will set the world on fire and become a bestseller. Years later, Jacob wonders why Evan's surefire hit was never published and that's when he learns Evan died awhile back. Hmm... it'd be a shame for Evan's incredible story to go to waste...
What I loved about this book, The Plot, is how the author created a tension filled thriller involving the publishing world of all things. It was an edge of your seat type read and given it revolves around writing, I just don't think it is a small feat to be able to pull that off. It was unconventional and creative and I was amazed I was able to maintain such a high interest level in the story once the ball got rolling.
Now, the ending didn't exactly pack as strong of a punch for me because I had pieced together a few things ahead of time. I'm not going to give myself a pat on the back though because a lightbulb went off in my head for one thing literally a few pages before it was revealed in the story. And the ending does go in a direction that I did find surprising.
Thank you Celadon Books for sending me an advance copy! All thoughts expressed are my honest opinion.
