I received an ARC of The Plot by Jean Hanff Korelitz from Celadon Books via Bookish First. This is the first of Jean Hanff Korelitz’s books I’ve read, but I think I’ve found a new favorite writer. I am obsessed with her writing style! She writes like I write in my dreams. I’m embarrassed I hadn’t heard of her before.
Disclaimer: I love books about books. Books about libraries, books about authors, books about failed or struggling writers, books about writing books. They feel like love letters to the reader. Like the author is acknowledging what brought us together. And The Plot feels like an ode to the art of fiction writing. When Korelitz is describing Jake’s writers block, his hopes and dreams for his career, his envy of others’ success, you can tell she’s writing from experience. Her writing feels authentic and it makes all of Jake’s choices more understandable. (Side note: why are female authors so much better at writing male characters than male authors are at writing female characters??)
After the initial introduction and set up, the storyline picks up and the pace never slows down. This book kept me turning pages well into the small hours. I will enthusiastically recommend it to anyone looking to read an impeccably written thriller!
