This book was a one-of-a kind experience that makes you truly think about what is considered “right” and what is considered “wrong.”
The novel begins with a very un-likeable protagonist- Jacob Bonner. He’s a “has-been” author, a terrible teacher, and an overall uppity man without any real path forward in life. With these characteristics, it’s hard as a reader to root for him as a protagonist.
This becomes even more difficult once Jacob decides to steal the plot of a novel from one of his former students who had passed away. This story makes Jacob famous, with multiple book tours, an Oprah interview, and even a movie deal with Spielberg.
Despite being an unlikeable main character, you find yourself feeling happy when Jacob becomes rich, famous, and happy. Clearly though, this is not where the book ends. It’s actually right where it begins. The book takes the reader on a thrilling journey as Jacob begins receiving harassing messages via social media discussing his theft of the plot. As Jacob searches across the country to discover who is sending these messages, the suspense builds, leaving the reader turning page after page to find out what is actually going on until you reach the final twisting conclusion.
Admittedly, the book begins slow, but once you get through that slow start, get ready to experience a myriad of emotions that’ll keep you thinking long after you turn that final page.
