As a creative writing teacher myself, it was interesting delving into a story where the school itself is dedicated to writing instead of the sciences. As "The Plot" by Jean Hanff Korelitz says, "Every single person had a unique voice and a story nobody else could tell." This is something I try to instill in my students every day and it really struck a cord with me. In the excerpt, we follow Jacob Finch Bonner, a wannabe writer who had seemingly given up on his dreams, as he teaches creative writing to aspiring writers at Ripley. Filled with an exquisite sense of detail, we watch as Bonner meets Alice, a new colleague who was a fan of his previous work, and realizes that he no longer was proud of his past accomplishments, that his work left him feeling empty inside. It intrigues me, and I am curious to see how this student's plot will capture his attention and bring back his writer's spark.
