I liked this book. When I first started reading it, it was very much what I was expecting. I really enjoyed Willow's character. I admired her love of learning and really felt for her naïveté it wanting to leave thinking she'd get what she wanted and not understanding what she's giving up. I also never knew that there was a Korean migration to Hawaii and I really liked learning about another part of history that was so new to me. The only thing I didn't like was the time jump in the book. I am tired of historical novels that tell stories from the present and the past relating to each other. It feels really over done and in this book in particular i would rather have just finished Willow's story than learn about a girl from years later.
I realize that this was a translated book but I didn't find the translation awkward. There were points where the language seemed strange but it didn't spoil my enjoyment of the book.
