I enjoy historical fiction and I appreciate the larger number of stories featuring and centering women. In this first impression of The Picture Bride, we're introduced to three young women in Korea who have made the transformative decision to travel to the US as pictures brides marrying men they've never met (only knowing them by name, age and a photograph). This is just the start of what promises to be a tough journey ahead, both physically and emotionally. The writing, plot and characters seems a bit simpler than Min Jin Lee's Pachinko and Lisa See's The Island of Sea Women, but I do think the story will be compelling to many and serve as a way for English-reading people to learn a new perspective in history that might be new for them.
