This book completely surprised me. There were so many things happening with queer representation and the conversation around transgender individuals and dont forget the soccer! There was so much conversation brought up about being transgender and their rights in school and sports. I feel like it was much needed representation in a YA book and allow someone who might be dealing with the same challenges to know they are not alone. I loved Spencer's relationship with his family and seeing his development. You also have the love interest who comes from a religious background that throws a wrench in the mix. I loved see the development and growth in the characters and see them come into their own. It had heartbreaking moments but also joyful and beautiful times. I loved the message that everyone has their own journey and its okay to be brave and not know everything.
