This was a cute, pretty standard feeling YA contemporary.

Spencer was easy to like and root for, and I liked a lot of the side characters. Especially Theo, Aiden and Riley, for their understanding and support, but also Spencer's parents who seemed realistic and kind, but not perfect, and I thought it was important to see how allyship and good parenting isn't about being a perfect ally, but about being mindful and willing to change. I loved reading Spencer's interactions with his family, teammates, and friends.

The romance was honestly my least favorite part of it, which is a bummer, because when it began to blossom, I thought it had a lot of potential and I was rooting for them. It didn't seem super developed, and then suddenly was serious. The religious boyfriend in the closet obviously made it hard for them, but after the drama, the end felt weirdly paced. I'm willing to overlook that it seemed a little too easy for everything to work out, when we know from Spencer's previous experiences that it definitely wasn't then, because we just need gay happy endings.
