First of all, I really did love this book. It has a really diverse cast, lovable characters, and non-toxic dude bro background characters. Spencer and Justice had a lot of depth, and because Spencer hadn’t come out as trans for most of the book, there was definitely a struggle.
I did have one issue, which was just pacing. It’s a pretty short book, which there’s nothing wrong with, but it’s also SO FAST. Maybe it’s just that I’m a fantasy reader reviewing a contemporary novel, but I thought everything progressed way too fast for a book with so much internal and external struggle. I cared about what was going on, but the speed with which everything happened made me a bit bored just because all of the problems were over right after the previous one was resolved.
Overall, I loved THE PASSING PLAYBOOK, I just wished it was a little longer and a little slower. Fans of the entire (small) YA queer sports romcom genre will be happy.
