Isaac Fitzsimon's The Passing Playbook is a feel-good young adult story about a transgender teen who is impossible not to love. In fact, every character is this book is endearing. That's not to say this story is lacking in conflict and drama - it definitely has plenty of both.
Spencer, a talented soccer player at a new school where no one knows he's transgender, experiences conflict with his parents, within his Queer-Straight Alliance group, with his love interest, and with himself as he grapples with a big decision - whether to remain stealth or come out as trans.
Fitzsimons writes really compelling dialogue that launched me right into each scene and connected me to the characters. I loved Spencer and his life so much, I flew through this exciting, affirming, and impactful novel in just one day. This is an easy book to recommend to others!
