The Paper Wasp releases tomorrow, and I have SO many thoughts about this book.
Note: Paper wasps will only attack if they are provoked or threatened. But once threatened, you better be ready for what is about to go down.
*Enter book* The Paper Wasp is weird, creepy, and will blow your mind. This author is an extremely creative writer, and as a result, I flew through this book and was fascinated with it up until the end.
Abby meets up with her childhood best friend, Elise, at her high school reunion in Michigan. Abby, although brilliant and artistically talented, has been in Michigan the entire time, living with depression, and her life is going nowhere fast. Meanwhile, Elise left in high school for Hollywood and has since then become a famous actress with a successful career.
Elise casually tells Abby she misses her and if she ever happens to be in LA to contact her. A few months later, guess who happens to be in LA? Abby. Elise is surprised, but takes her in and the two grow their friendship back to where it was. Abby becomes Elise’s assistant, moves in, and they go everywhere together. #bestiesforlife
But the reader sees Abby for who she really is. She has an entire shoebox of magazine cutouts of Elise and admires everything about her and wants to be THE CLOSEST FRIEND POSSIBLE BECAUSE ELISE IS PERFECT AND THEIR BOND SHOULD NEVER BE BROKEN.
Yikes. So obviously, this story takes many twists and turns. It is dark, chaotic, but also artistic and fun. I loved the book, and it’s the reason I had a sunburn for a few days, because I couldn’t put it down long enough to put sunscreen on.
But alas, without giving anything away... The ending, while completely unexpected, just left me going, “WHAT DID I JUST READ?! NO. AHHHH. WHYYYYYY?!”
Anyway, this was so so good, I’m still glad I read it, but I can’t give it more than 3 stars because I grew a bond with this book, and it in turn punched me in the face and ran away, leaving me nothing but confusion and shame 😉. ⭐️⭐️⭐️.
