Long story short, Emily, the main character, begins a relationship with Adam. All is well until she meets his mother, Pammie. Pammie is unbelievably abrasive and it is clear she doesn't like Emily. She's constantly criticizing her and making small digs at her. Pammie's behaviour becomes excessive and she goes to far lengths in order to try and break up Emily and Adam as the story progresses but Emily is determined not to let Pammie "win" (win what, exactly I'm not sure; there's no winning if you're miserable in the relationship!!!).

I didn't understand why she didn't just leave the relationship, especially when it became more and more apparent that Adam wasn't that great of a guy! She really wanted to spite his mother that much that she were willing to stay in a toxic relationship? It's just not realistic!

I also can't even begin to imagine what was going through Emily's head at times with the way she handled situations with Pammie. I honestly wanted to strangle Emily throughout the entire novel; both she and Pammie were extremely unlikeable.

I'd begun to suspect what the big reveal/twist was when I was about 80% in but the way it played out was horrible. Everything, literally everything, could've been avoided from the beginning and that's what pissed me off the most. It left me wondering what the point of the novel even was. I gave it two stars because despite it all, it was still a page turner and I needed to know how it would all end (and then promptly returned it and got my wasted credit on Audible back!).
