Alternate universes-so hot right now. And that's what I'm calling this book, an alternate universe Arthurian legend. We've got Arthur as a bookish prince who doesn't want the pressure, Lancelot as a guard because of a years-ago scandal, and Merlin is long gone and has left his twin children, Emmett and Emry, with their grandmother. Emmett is summoned to become the new wizard apprentice at the castle, but due to his lack of skill, a spell he casts backfires and Emry decides to go in his place disguised as him until he gets better.
There's so much to enjoy in the book. First off, it's got great humor throughout. It's not too dark or brooding and allows itself to be light. There's plenty of the main legend within the story-the sword in the stone, Excalibur, the lady of the lake, etc.-but there are enough twists on the legends that it isn't stale and old! There's LGBTQ+ rep, feminism plot points, and a plot twist that opens up the way for a series. Can't wait!
