The writing style makes it very dramatic, but I find it hard to follow along

I feel like the way the author wrote it, kind of in a poetic way, makes everything overly dramatic. However, the short chapters and oddly phrased sentences do make it harder to understand the plot. I get the gist of it, but I don't understand the deeper parts.
