This book is broken into segments: "now" and "once". "Now" is often scattered, July's thoughts drifting in the way that often happens when someone is panicked. "Once" is more connected, telling chronological stories. However, stories told from the perspective of child-July are also told in the scattered way of "now". This is only a small portion of the book, but already the atmosphere is set so well. July is isolated, and she is afraid. The cover also sets the tone for the isolation. Blues and blacks lead to the melancholic feel.

This book is clearly going to deal with themes of isolation, growing up, moving on, and the inherent grief of leaving childhood.
