Prom Night twelve years ago at Long Acre High School was a night filled with tragedy and terror when a mass shooting killed nearly everyone. The few that survived were dubbed by the media as The Ones That Got Away. For Finn Dorsey and Liv Arias they still live with the nightmares.

Liv never thought she would return to Long Acre, but when a documentary about the shootings brings her back to where it all happened, Liv runs into her old flame Finn. Finn, dubbed the "hero" of the night, finds it difficult to live up to the moniker. Liv literally stared death down and narrowly escaped the same fate as her classmates, now she's retreated to a life of safety and comfort. But when they come together again, they end up pushing past the walls they've each put up and threaten to tumble down.

I really liked the character study of how such a tragic and horrific event can have a profound effect on the lives of those who survived. Roni Loren doesn't shy away from this idea, and I think as the series progresses and as we hear the other survivors's stories, this is only going to solidify even more. Then Ms. Loren wrapped everything up within a second-chance romance trope and it all worked together perfectly. I mean how else to work through tragedy than with the person you loved that also went through that tragedy with you.

I liked how everything circled around the happening twelve years ago. I was worried that it might get pushed to the side, especially as we learn what our characters are up to in their present lives, but no, Roni Loren cleverly keeps the past events front and center, and in my opinion, rightfully so. She ties their present lives so tightly to the past. Everything that they are doing, or everything that they've done since can somehow be linked to that fateful night.

You could practically feel the pull between Liv and Finn and them wanting to be back together again. Their chemistry is hot, and I liked the pacing Roni Loren took in actually getting them back together again. I love a good second-chance romance, the only thing I could have asked for was just a little bit more from when they were together when they were younger, just a little bit to make the connection between them as adults even stronger.

Something else I could have used more of is the bond formed between the survivors. Namely Liv, Kincaid, Talyn, and Rebecca. They were all, I believe, girls from different social circles, but banded together after the tragedy and formed a unit. I wanted more from that strong supportive female unit, but, with the assumption that upcoming books will feature these women as leads, we'll continue to get more glimpses of those friendships down the line.

Overall, I've enjoyed the start to this new series. I'm interested to see how the other survivors have coped with what happened, and to see the story from their perspective.
