In this sample of The Ones Who Got Away, readers get a taste of the two main characters, Liv and Finn, through two well-crafted chapters. The chapters alternate perspectives, making the novel a dual point of view format.

Liv and Finn are called back to their high school in order to participate in the filming of a documentary about the tragedy that occurred there so many years ago--a horrific shooting during prom. They were not expecting to see one another at the interviews and definitely were not expecting to experience the same high school chemistry they once had. Conflicted by both the anxiety of reliving these memories and the still-persisting spark between them, Liv and Finn have to find a way to make sense of their feelings and situation.

"Asking us to come back here, to talk about all these things again…it requires more than anyone realizes. It rips open things that we try to keep stitched up."

The text is formatted into an easy-to-read, relaxed language and sculpts characters that are immediately relatable and likeable. The alternating perspectives embrace two personalities are both distinct and interesting. We get to see each character from the view-point of the other and experience some of the internal conflict that each of them are battling. After only two chapters, I felt like I knew these two people and I wanted to know more about their respective stories.

Let me quickly say that this is NOT my usual genre. I go for the criminal investigations and psychological thrillers. Not romance. Definitely NOT romance.

BUT..... half way through this sample, I opened another window, made a few simple little clicks, and guess what? This novel will be on my door step on release day. I think that says a lot for these two little chapters!
