The book begins with one of the survivors of a school shooting doing an interview with a reporter. She struggles to recount her story, whether it’s due to PTSD or embarrassment (she was making out with another girl's boyfriend at the time), is unclear. I love the idea of their being a school shooting. Not that I think that they’re a good thing in real life, but high school is idealized. It’s supposed to be happy and amazing and safe and the best time of your life. Seeing the other side of that, where people lost loved ones and would suffer for the rest of their lives, either from PTSD or grief, is really interesting. The book keeps alternating between flashbacks of the event and present day, which is also really interesting, because you can see how her thought process since that day has changed, and how she has changed, which I really do love.
