Liv and Finn two classmates of several, who are termed “The Ones Who Got Away” from the school tragedy. Book grabs and draws you in, so intense and haunting about a HS shooting and the survivors’ remorse. Twelve years after the shooting a few survivors return to give their account for a documentary for charity that will benefit the families of the ones who lost their lives. What stuck with me was Liv's statement and account of what happened to her during the shooting, " I was the girl who was locked in the closet". Real story is that Liv was in the closet with Finn grabbing stolen moments together at prom while Finn's date yells, "gun" he leaves Liv in the closet and takes a bullet for his prom date, but shooter finds Liv. Years later, Finn cannot forgive himself for what he did to Liv and Liv blames Finn for her PTSD. The two see each other for the first time when Liv wraps up her portion of the story for the documentary and Finn is next to tell his. He starts to apologize to Liv, but she cuts him off and walks out. I like the sisterhood of Liv and 3 other female survivors who bonded after the shooting that first year. Each has come back to tell their story and meet up for drinks and decide to open letters that they wrote to themselves years ago and some have realized portions of what they wrote to the Class of 2005 and Liv realizes that she hasn’t done anything based on her letter and makes a vow to start working on fulfilling what she wrote, one of which is dating passionate men. Of course, Finn fills that requirement. From the flashbacks of the two, to seeing each other for the first time and throughout the book, the chemistry between the two is smoking hot. I really liked both characters and Liv’s tell it like it is attitude and liked Finn a lot too. The epilogue was great as I wondered about Finn’s job and how things would work out. Can’t wait to read the second book, which is Becca's story.
