“Logic ended where love began.”

“Anger boils up in my throat at the thought that who we are is determined by how others intend to use us.”

Having received this book in a book box subscription, I had no idea what it was going to be about! I tried to dive in without looking up any descriptions or ratings, so all I had to reference was the cover (which is gorgeous, by the way!) and slipcase.

Let me tell you that it wasn’t at all what I expected, and I was surprised in an excellent way! I would call this a YA dystopian sci-fi novel, and it contained some of the societal elements reminiscent of Black Mirror, technological elements you’d expect to see in a Kazuo Ishiguro book, and some mysterious “waking up on an island with no idea whats going on” elements that give off strong LOST vibes.

The book discussed many relevant topics, including climate change and pollution, complicated family and sibling relationships, ethical considerations concerning artificial intelligence, class inequalities, and a tug-of-war between the ideas of the common good vs. individual self-preservation.

While it took me a little bit of time to really become invested in one of the narrator’s stories, on account of the character seeming very distant and almost robotic in nature, it did happen and I eventually grew to enjoy that the author portrayed her this way.

I very much enjoyed the story overall and found the premise and plot twists to be unique and captivating!

✅ for dystopian book lovers and anyone looking for a unique sort of sci-fi story
