'The Ones We're Meant to Find' has been one of my most anticipated books of 2021, and having received an advance copy, it did not disappoint. The opening pages introduce us to Celia, who washed up on the shore of an island without any memory of her past other than a sister she wants to get back to. Kasey lives in an eco-city, wondering what happened to her sister who went missing years earlier and has never been found. As Celia works to build a boat and leave the island for good, searching for the sister she forgets more and more each day, Kasey delves into the depth of the city following her sister's final days before vanishing, searching for a clue as to what caused her to leave. This tale of two sisters is riveting as the mystery unfolds against the futuristic backdrop of what our world has become as we continue to destroy the environment, and brings the effects of human destruction into the lives of two sisters who search to be reunited. I was captivated from the beginning, both with trying to solve the mystery and learning what society has become as humanity struggles to survive. With alternating chapters, I found myself speeding through the story wanting to get back to each sister as their chapter ended, but feeling captivated by the sister I was then reading about.
