The Ones We're Meant to Find opens with a melancholy and mysterious air. The protagonist is the only human on this island, and she makes or finds mechanical companions to help her leave the island and find her sister. It's clear from how she talks to her creations or the occasional animals that she finds that the protagonist is achingly lonely. She's also experiencing a weird distortion of the senses, amnesia, and sleepwalking that always takes her to the beach. The other chapter is narrated by her sister who lives in a high-tech future. People use bytes as money, have elaborate virtual reality parties, and use computer interfaces with their brains to read lips. She's coping with the loss of her sister, which no one can explain. The people in this book speak a special lingo (saying "Thank Joules"). It appears that when her sister was around, she was very charismatic and popular.
