this book was one of my most anticipated reads of this year, and i was absolutely delighted to get my hands on a hardcover copy before it got released! the cover is just gorgeous, and i loved the asian representation in this book.

two sisters, kasey and celia haven't seen each other in years. kay lives in an eco-city, one of the last inhabitable places for humans. on the other hand, cee disappeared three years ago, now presumed dead to everyone in the city. kay doesn't quite believe cee is dead, who actually lives on an abandoned island with no memories except ones of her sister kay.

the sisters are very different yet similar, reminding myself of my sister and i. i loved reading both of their povs, learning about the world and science from kay as well as the survival and hardships of cee.

cee keeps building boats out of scrap metal on the island, but she never manages to make it to kay. suddenly, a boy washes up shore, and they begin to tentatively trust each other. he can't remember anything, just like her, and a slow companionship forms between them. her attempts at building boats and rafts keep breaking down, and complications with the boy makes things worse.

kay tries to track down her sister's intraface, an advanced software that they use, and she meets a boy, who used to be cee's before she disappeared. the two of them work together to figure out what happened to cee, while unearthing a lot of secrets and lies hidden under the surface of their utopian city.

it was exciting to see them slowly work to get back to each other, but their reunion was completely unexpected for me, a total plot twist. truth to be told, i was quite confused at what happened, because some of the science and technological aspects of the book were confusing. i really wish this was explained more, because i was completely confused at parts with kay's pov.

and ohmygod the ending was crazy, because i was still reeling from other plot twists. the ending was also pretty open ended, leaving a lot of speculation.

overall, i loved the author's writing style and the way she wrote each pov. i liked how the themes of a post-apocalyptic world were explored, environmental issues, climate change, and new technologies. i would have liked it if the technology, world-building, and ending were explained, but it did leave a lot to think about.

i loved this book and devoured it despite it's flaws and it did not disappoint! i deeply recommend this to anyone looking for a thrilling novel.
