Sarcasm and wit amidst difficult fantasy world

I love a good, vivid opening scene that puts us right into a fantasy world! The sarcastic, wry voice of the protagonist has me chuckling despite the difficult situation she's in. I'm not sure I can quite picture the technology that is described, but I'm sure with more chapters I will get a better idea. I can tell already that I'll be completely invested in these characters and their relationships with each other. I need this book!
