Great showing and not telling

I like how the story progresses by showing and not telling. We learn about the protagonist through action, like getting to see how she looks like through her own eyes from the reflection on the pool and not through a random third-person storyteller telling us how she looks like. It makes the story really fun to read and makes the impression more significant and memorable.
Also, I love the Asian references like planting taro or eating taro bread. Finally some representation!
