"The Nine" by Gwen Strauss follows Hélène Podliasky and nine other female resistance fighters through planning their escape from a German forced labor camp. They then described their ten day journey to Paris from Germany.

These women were badasses! They were all under the age of 30 when they joined the resistance, smuggling items through Europe, coordinated communications, and hid Jewish children.

Arrested by the French police and interrogated and tortured by the Gestapo, they were eventually deported to Germany. The girls met on in prison, via transit, and at Ravenbruck. By the time they were all sent to the labor camp in Leipzig, they were good friends. Right before the end of the war in Europe, the girls were forced on a death march and decided to escape!

I love books about history, and this one did not disappoint! It is written as a novel but is nonfiction. The girls' story of survival and resilience is amazing, and it is amazing that this story was published. The way the author wove the girls' stories together was done seamlessly. I never heard of these brave women in all the reading I have done about World War II.

I received this book via the mail yesterday, 2.8, and I spent all night reading it!

Thank you to Bookishfirst and St. Martin's Press for this ARC. This opinion is my own and not influenced in anyway.

This will be posted to my Instagram account once the book is published.
