"nine who didn't want to die, and who fought together to return to LIFE" was Zaza's, one of the nines, account of when the escape ends.
I found that very powerful because I feel that none of the nine would have survived had they not each other. This is an incredible story of such strong women. It left me feeling happy, that they survived, sad, that coming home was so hard, overwhelmed, by all the torture and trauma inflicted on them, and mournful, that it was so painful for the nine to discuss what had happened, that a lot of their story was left unsaid. Because they were women, people did not want to know of all the hardships they endured. I felt people in that time period would feel ashamed that this happened to females. These nine women were such hero's in my mind. Gwen Strauss did her Aunt Helene proud with this book. It is very well written and researched. I would recommend this book to anyone who reads WWII historical fiction but to remember that this is NOT fiction (even at times while reading you wished it were).
Thanks to #bookishFirst, @StMartinsPress, and @GwenSkioski for an ARC of #TheNine.
