Readers who loved The Nightingale by Kristen Hannah and The Lilac Girls by Martha Hall Kelley will love this story. This was a really engaging narrative non-fiction book that clearly took a lot of in depth research by the author. My favorite parts were centered on the nine women and their interactions as they make their escape—the author weaved in great details showing each women’s distinct personality. My preference would have been for the author to split the book into three clear sections: the story of the escape, followed by the aftermath and then details about the research and her personal connection, as the current structure is somewhat disjointed. I also wish that the author further described the trip (or trips?) to Europe that she took to conduct the related research and her emotional connection to get great-aunt’s story.
