The Nine tells the story of 9 women, all of whom were political prisoners of the Nazi Third Reich due to their involvement in Le Resistance, the French Resistance. The author beautifully connects the personal nature of her great aunt's story with a historical attention to detail. Strauss's aunt, Helene but known during the movement as "Christine," was the leader of the Nine, and helped to organize the womens' escape.

The jacket cover is slightly disappointing, as it seemed immediately to be a fairly typical story of World War II heroism. The story inside, however, is so much more. Strauss's writing is truly remarkable and handles the often-horrifying subject matter with respect and artful storytelling. I can't wait to read more!
