Thrillers are a hard thing to write well and this one falls a little short for me. I am so tired of secret government societies and a corrupt democracy. Honestly, if I wanted to read/hear stories about that I can just turn on the news.
However, since this book is very much a political thriller, I think it will be a popular pick for people who already like this genre but would be a poor jumping in point for someone unfamiliar with the tropes and expectations of this style of storytelling.
