This was just a fantastic book! It's been a while since I've read a book by Susan Crandall but she never fails to disappoint. This historical fiction novel is set primarily in the not-too-distant past, the 60's/70's, in the deep South. It follows a family who can easily be described as dysfunctional as the country is in turmoil. It's a coming of age story with a lot of history thrown in, but it also deals with a lot of issues we've changed our perspective on as a country, like alcoholism, race, and mental illness. There's a mystery, and there is heartbreak, but it is more than that. Is it the best book I've ever read? No. But I loved it nonetheless and I would recommend it to anyone looking for something different to read this summer.
