Tulluah, grew up in family where she always felt the weight of the entire town watching and judging her family. Her Mother was from up north and didn't fit in well in a town that always waiting for missteps so they could use them to gossip. Tullah's father adores her Mother and forgives her social transgressions. After Tullah's Mother has twins she decides that she would like to free of the responsibility of raising children so the responsibility falls to Tullah. Tulluah, does the best she can but dreams of escape. Disaster strikes and the children are split up to be raised by guardians that are deemed appropriate. Tullah, makes her escape and builds a successful life for herself in California but then must return home to face the tragedy of her brother being in jail for murder. Upon her return she finds out that things did not turn out as she planned and she is forced to deal with her brother's defense and her relationship with her siblings and those that she left behind.
