So I have read quite a few dystopian novels in my day, so I was excited to dive into this one. It is compared to “The Handmaiden’s Tale,” so I felt I had a grasp on what the story might be about going in. Boy was I wrong

The premise is that there are “elites boarding school” type locations that if you get into, you are basically guaranteed a good life. That is so not the case this “school” really trains people to the one way of life, which is what they expect you to do. It’s very indoctrinating of their opinions. It felt very bleak and brainwash-y, and I found myself dragging my way through it.

The characters are engaging, and I did sympathize with their struggles, and want to see them get better, and do better, but the desolation of their experience kind of made me not care about their outcome. I know the idea of dystopian is to do better, and you eventually achieve better, but it felt so bleak that I struggled to read.
