Slow Moving
This is Christian faith based historical fiction. Although it is the first book in The Daughters of the Mayflower series it can be read as a standalone, as can all the books in this series. It is also not necessary to read the books in series order. I happened to read this after the second and third books. Unfortunately, I did not enjoy this as much as I did the other titles and am not sure I would have been interested in continuing the series had I read this first.
The cover is gorgeous and the time period is appealing. However, I found the story slow moving and choppy, and I never felt an attachment to the main characters. While realizing that this is a faith based novel, and that the characters are Separatists who are a faith filled people, I found that this book was much more filled with references to praying and scriptures than the others were, to the point that the story felt bogged down and unnaturally preachy. I truly appreciate the fact that the author incorporated some fictional characters to create this novel, but set them amongst real historical figures on the Mayflower. I especially enjoyed the historical facts and notes provided by the author, and found those tidbits more intriguing than the story itself.
Although this was not a great book match for me, this could definitely appeal to others. I recommend it for anyone who is interested in a very scripture focused historical set in this time period.
