This book promised "history, romance, adventure, faith, and family trees"...all of my favorite things in a book! I am such a historical fiction fan and one era I haven't read much on was the pilgrims/early settlers.

I can't imagine living the life of Mary Elizabeth Chapman, in such hard times, when crossing the ocean in a hip could easily be the last thing you ever do. The pure misery of what ship life is described as is terrible to envision. But it also shows the determination and courage of people in those times. Sometimes historical fiction can be confusing or complicated in it's language and I didn't feel that this book was that way, however, it was slow in parts and focused on details that just seemed to take up space to me. I am undecided if I will read the next book in this series, as I have so many on my to-read list and don't know if this will make the cut.
