Nothing Dowdy About These Puritan Girls Who Take On The New World!
In The Mayflower Bride I was instantly curious to find out why two nearly grown girls were sneaking through the attic to eavesdrop on a conversation being held by the elders. I love richly embroidered characters, and Mary Elizabeth and Dorothy are a great duo. Mary Elizabeth is hesitant, fearful, but faithful while Dorothy is naturally adventurous. It's obvious that these girls have a beautiful friendship. I would predict that Mary Elizabeth would find herself in more than one sticky situation with a friend like Dorothy. I can hardly wait to see what these two bright girls do! The setting is filled out nicely with the proper names of things used on a ship and the circumstances for necessitating the Saints leaving to the New World. Religious belief is explained in a very logical, step by step process for these faithful people which is very important to understand their motivation in the decisions they are making. When Mary Elizabeth spoke about her religious beliefs I felt like I was actually hearing someone filled with faith in God speak, and they were vibrant and interesting.
William quickly proves to be an interesting character. He is to keep a record of the happenings in the settlement for the Virginia Company because he was recommended by his master, and friend, who had passed away. William appears to be a private person and a hard worker. I will be interested to see how William interacts with Mary Elizabeth and Dorothy.
Peter, who had vied for the position given to William, seems petty, grasping and a trouble maker. I'm anticipating that there will be friction between William and Peter. I was glad to see that William had quickly made friends with another craftsman his own age, so that he won't be lonely.
The tension is already quickly rising with the ship, Speedwell, taking on water. These brave settlers will face many challenges, obstacles and dangers. I greatly look forward to reading the rest of this novel. The cast of characters offers plenty of opportunities to see the New World in a new way.
