I'm hesitant to pick up historical fiction in general, so there are a number of factors that made it clear early on that this book won't be for me. The author wrote a detailed author's note that overly describes the ways in which she has adapted the language for a modern audience, and before the book even starts there is also a glossary and a multi-page cast of characters. The story itself seems okay, but the aforementioned items and the fact that the 1600s are generally not my favorite time period to read combine to make me pretty certain that this isn't a story I need to continue.
