An interesting premise, this book combines historical fact with fictional characters to create a story about some of our earliest settlers. Early on, we learn about two of the young women on the journey, cautious and fearful Mary Elizabeth and exuberant and adventurous Dorothy. They are best friends who are on the ship, the Speedwell, along with some of their family members. We also meet a young man who is on the Mayflower named William. Abandoned as a baby, William is slow to trust anybody and has only truly loved one other person, his old master, P… who died before he set out to join the new settlers on their journey.

I found it interesting that the author chose to follow Mary Elizabeth, rather than Dorothy in the story. Normally, the more dynamic character is central because of the energy they bring to the story. But caution is needed during the journey to the New World, and my guess is that Mary Elizabeth goes through a major transformation during this time, though it is only a guess.

I am curious to find out what else happens to these characters, however, it really would be more accurate for me to say that I am really interested in the true story of the Speedwell and the Mayflower and I love that this story weaves those elements into the plot.

Book Cover
I really liked the book cover. It immediately related to the story and helped the reader with a visual to go back in time with.
