I’m conflicted with this one.
The Mavellers is the start of a new middle grade series that tells the story of a young black teen who is the first conjurer to attend a school solely for Mavellers.
The pacing of the book within the first half felt pretty slow but that could just be me being used to more fast paced books but it did give off the feeling of dumping a bunch of information at you instead of describing the world that was created within the storytelling itself.
I will say though that I do appreciate the diversity that is in this book and the way the author handled portraying prejudice, microagressions we see the main character deal with. Seeing her finding her own path within this world that’s been laid out in front of her and persevering through.
As far as this steady stream of black girl magic books have been giving to us, I will say this one wasn’t necessary my favorite but I’m looking forward to reading the next one.
