"The Marvellers" by Dhonielle Clayton is the story of eleven year old Ella Durand, the first Conjurer to attend Arcanum Training Institute for Marvellers. When a dangerous criminal called the Ace of Anarchy escapes prison, anti-Conjurer sentiment skyrockets. Ella and her friends Bridget and Jason must work together to take on the Aces, and maybe even the whole of Marvellian society.
Everyone loves a magical boarding school story and I, for one, will never get tired of them! While the three students couldn't be any further from different, Ella, Bridget, and Jason are such a fun trio. They support one another and balance each other nicely, and I love how their confidence and abilities grow throughout the story. The worldbuilding and magic system here is so rich, with so many different types of magic and magical tools, not to mention the enchanted food! I also love the shoutouts to authors via characters in the book. It's so fun seeing names you recognize and makes you feel like you're in on something. I'm so glad that this is a series (The Memory Thieves is out now!) so I can stay in this world for a little longer.
