The Marvellers offers a bright, bold new addition to shelves for middle grade readers, a category that can often be difficult to navigate. This story is perfect for kids who are growing out of elementary aged books, who are looking ahead to their teen years, but perhaps aren't ready for the harder-hitting topics that some young adult books tackle, particularly those geared more for upper teens. It doesn't shy away from topics like institutionalized discrimination and bullying, but handles them appropriately for the target reader's age. Ella's family, well-known and respected among Conjurors but looked down upon by Marvellers, are reminiscent of the Weasleys - boisterous, loving, skilled in magic, and always looking to rise above hatred to do what's right. The author's involvement with We Need Diverse Books plays out well on the pages here. The Marveller school effortlessly includes people from all walks of life in a way that feels authentic, not forced. It feels accurate for what is described, an international school of magic. Fantasy fans should definitely give this one a try!
